IMPORTANT UPDATE: Care About Cushing’s Scheme – 2026
Boehringer Ingelheim’s Care About Cushing’s initiative, which many of our clients use to access *free diagnostic and monitoring testing for Equine Cushing’s (PPID), is changing. The scheme will now move to a more focused free PPID testing campaign, concentrating on spring and autumn only.
From 1 February 2026:
✓ Free* initial diagnostic PPID testing will be available ONLY in Spring (March–April), when laminitis risk is highest, and Autumn (September–October), when ACTH testing is most diagnostically accurate.
✓ A new free* dose-checker test will be introduced from 4–6 weeks after starting treatment, to confirm whether the prescribed medication dose is appropriate.
✓ Free* Annual monitoring tests will take place in spring or autumn - a year after your dose-checker**
Horse owners must work with a participating veterinary practice (like us!) to generate a voucher code for the lab tests. Please make sure the voucher is requested before or during your appointment so it can be submitted alongside the blood sample or it will be too late.
We realise these schemes can get confusing - so if you have any questions please contact the office to discuss or visit the Care About Cushing's website https://careaboutcushings.co.uk/ - where educational resources, digital tracking tools and reminder alerts are available.
* Free ACTH laboratory fees only. Other visit charges may apply.
** Horses already on treatment before February 2026 will remain eligible for their annual monitoring test at any time of year.
